Resident Guide: How Electricity Works at a PowerCord Energy Property
If your apartment uses PowerCord Energy, your electricity service is set up automatically as part of your lease. You don't need to research providers, compare rates, or call anyone before move-in day. This guide explains what happens at each stage of your lease — from enrollment before you move in, to what happens when you move out.
What Happens Before You Move In
When your lease is signed, PowerCord Energy receives your move-in date from the property management system. Before your lease start date, you will receive an enrollment email from PowerCord with three documents: the Electricity Facts Label (EFL), the Terms of Service (TOS), and Your Rights as a Customer (YRAC). These are standard required disclosures for all electricity enrollments in Texas.
The Electricity Facts Label shows your electricity rate, the contract length, the name of the retail electricity provider, and estimated monthly costs at different usage levels. Review it, complete the enrollment step in the email, and you're done. Your electricity will be active on the date your lease starts.
If you don't receive an enrollment email at least a few days before your move-in date, contact PowerCord Energy support through the chat on this page or text (877) 367-6597. Don't wait until move-in day.
Will the Lights Be On When I Move In?
Yes, as long as you completed the enrollment step in the email before your move-in date. PowerCord activates service on the lease start date. If you completed enrollment and there's no power on move-in day, contact support immediately — service activation issues can typically be resolved the same day with the retail electricity provider.
Who Is My Electricity Provider?
Your electricity comes from a licensed retail electricity provider (REP) in the Texas ERCOT deregulated market. The provider's name is listed on your Electricity Facts Label. PowerCord Energy is a registered broker (PUCT BR240257) that coordinated your enrollment with that provider. PowerCord is not your electricity provider and does not send you a bill. Your monthly electricity bill comes directly from the REP.
How Billing Works
You will receive a monthly electricity bill from the retail electricity provider listed in your EFL. The bill reflects your actual usage at the rate you agreed to during enrollment. Pay the bill directly to the provider. PowerCord Energy is not involved in billing and does not collect payments.
If you have a question about a charge on your bill, contact the retail electricity provider first — they are responsible for billing. If you have a question about your enrollment dates, contract terms, or service start and end dates, contact PowerCord Energy. We can see your enrollment record and help clarify what was set up and when.
What Happens If You Renew Your Lease
If you renew your lease at the same address, your electricity contract may renew as well, or PowerCord may initiate a new enrollment depending on the contract length you originally signed. You will receive notice before your contract expires if a renewal or re-enrollment step is required. In most cases, the process is the same as the original enrollment: a short email with documents to review and confirm.
What Happens When You Move Out
Your electricity contract ends on your lease termination date automatically. You do not need to call to cancel service. PowerCord terminates your contract on the date your lease ends. After that date, you are no longer responsible for electricity charges at that address.
If you are moving to a new apartment, you will need to set up electricity at the new address unless that property also uses PowerCord Energy. If it does, the same process applies: you'll receive an enrollment email before your new lease starts. If the new property does not use PowerCord, you'll need to contact a retail electricity provider directly and arrange service before your move-in date.
